  • Board Appoints Syndy Nugent to Fill Vacancy

On January 3, 2012, the Winthrop Harbor School District #1 Board of Education interviewed six excellent, highly qualified candidates to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of board member Dee Georgou. Though it was a difficult decision, the board appointed Syndy Nugent to fill the vacancy. Mrs. Nugent was appointed on January 3, 2012 and will serve until the next regular school board election (2013). The board carefully and thoughtfully established qualifications for the appointee prior to the interview process. Mrs. Nugent meets these qualifications and has demonstrated her willingness to accept the duties and responsibilities of a school board member. Her clear understanding of the demands and expectations associated with the position and her constructive attitude towards the challenges facing the district make her well-qualified to serve in this capacity. While having previous experience as a board member, Mrs. Nugent also received the next highest vote in the 2011 election. The Winthrop Harbor School District #1 Board of Education is pleased to welcome Syndy Nugent to this position. All questions may be directed towards Dr. Dennis Guiser at (847) 731-3085.

  • Happy Holidays!

I would like to wish you and your family a very happy holiday season. During break we all get a chance to spend time with our families, relax, and start planning out our New Year’s Resolutions. I recently read an article from CNN online. The title of the article is “How To Get Your Kid To Be A Fantastic Reader”. At the beginning of the article James Patterson, yes - the 2010 Children’s Choice Author of the Year, shared a story of how he and his wife got their reluctant eight year-old child to read. I thought to myself, “Really, an author has a hard time getting his kid to read?” Then I wanted to read more because I knew that of course he did… he is just like the rest of us. The rest of the article gave strategies and websites that as an educator I am familiar with, but maybe some of you are not. So, I wanted to share the article with you as well as give you all a challenge. While you and your children are making your New Year’s Resolutions, please consider a reading challenge as well. I think we can all agree that the more we read, the better at reading we become and the more knowledgeable we are. And if you are one of those parents like Mr. Patterson or myself, a great website to jumpstart your resolution for those reluctant readers is ReadKiddoRead.com. Happy Reading in 2012! Mrs. Nottingham
