Social and Emotional Learning and Interventions

Students in grades K-8 receive instruction in social emotional learning in the core curriculum using the Second Step program. This program is aligned to the Illinois State Social Emotional Learning Standards. Students identified through data as needing additional support are referred to participate in a short-term Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Intervention group led by a school social worker and/or school psychologist.

Students identified through data as needing additional support may also be referred to Check-in/Check-out (CICO). This program is designed for students who would likely benefit from a supportive relationship with a staff member who serves as a mentor, and involves a “check-in” at the beginning of the school day and checking-out at the end of the school day. During the day, the teacher has brief “check-ins” with the teacher, and the student receives positive reinforcement for exhibiting district-wide behavior expectations.
